Jan 20, 2025: Public Statement on the Passing of Cecile Richards

On the passing of Cecile Richards, former President of Planned Parenthood Federation of America, Planned Parenthood Action, co-founder of Supermajority, and lifelong advocate for women’s health and justice, YWCA CEO Margaret Mitchell issued the following statement:

"It is with deep sorrow that we at YWCA USA mourn the passing of Cecile Richards, a towering feminist icon and a cherished friend of YWCA. Cecile’s tireless advocacy for women’s health, bodily autonomy, and rights – especially for those from historically marginalized communities – was a beacon of hope and example of leadership in action.

From her unwavering strength as CEO of Planned Parenthood Federation of America and Planned Parenthood Action to her work alongside Alicia Garza, Ai-jen Poo, Deidre Schifeling, Jess Morales Rocketto, and former YWCA USA board member, Katherine Grainger, to co-found gender justice organization, Supermajority, Cecile fought fearlessly and effectively for the rights, health, dignity, and equality of women and people of all gender identities. Her legacy is one of courage, compassion, and transformative change. Cecile’s unwavering commitment to justice and her ability to inspire and mobilize countless people and communities from every corner of this nation have left an indelible mark on the fight for gender equity.

Today, we honor her extraordinary contributions and commit to carrying forward her vision of a world where every person can live with dignity, autonomy, and opportunity. Cecile’s light will continue to guide us in our work."
