YWCA Applauds Historic Confirmation of Judge Ketanji Brown Jackson to the Supreme Court

Today, the United States Senate voted with a bipartisan majority (53:47) to confirm President Biden’s nominee, Judge Ketanji Brown Jackson, the first Black woman justice to the Supreme Court of the United States. Margaret Mitchell, CEO of YWCA USA, issued the following statement in response:“Today, we are witnessing history. Just on the heels of the 53rd anniversary of the assassination of Martin Luther King, Jr., the legacy of the movement work he sparked shines through in the confirmation of Justice Ketanji Brown Jackson. While it was especially painful to watch the racist, misogynistic treatment Justice Jackson – an overwhelmingly qualified nominee – endured during her Senate hearing and despite the partisan shenanigans of some members of the Senate Judiciary Committee, we finally have a Black woman on our nation’s highest court.As an organization that serves communities of color across the country, we know first-hand that our nation has a long way to go before we live in a society that is truly equitable and just. We know that one woman cannot carry the burden of righting so many wrongs but this moment in time is a critical, deeply impactful step in the right direction.We applaud Justice Jackson’s commitment to equal representation, to women’s health, to immigrant and worker rights, to racial, gender, and disability justice and stand proud knowing that we finally have a Court that looks more like the nation it is meant to serve. It should not have taken more than 200 years to get to this point, but I – and the entire YWCA network – am heartened to see this talented Black woman take the seat she has worked so hard to earn at the Supreme Court of the United States.”
